REVIEW: Kentaro African Vanilla Whipped Butter

Kentaro Handmade Organics was a rebrand of The Good Hair Collective founded by Charlyn Kentaro Otim. She got the idea to start the company when she was a student of the law in South Africa and realised what a hard time she had getting chemical-free products for her recently natural hair. When she got back to Uganda, she continued making natural hair butters for her friends and family and finally quit her work as a legal researcher to launch the company. SInce then, it has been leaps and bounds of developing some of the best products (and best packaging, might I add) for natural hair enthusiasts in Kampala.

Packaging

The whipped butter is packaged in a 200ml/7oz white tub with product labels on both the lid and the side. The labels include the ingredient list, usage instructions and the company info.

Product

The African Vanilla whipped butter is a vanilla scented hair butter, is creamy but not as fluffy as I’d expected for a whipped butter. It is described as “a creamy luxurious butter designed to give softness, strength and hold to hair”. Unfortunately for me, it smelled too much of shea butter, which scent I hate so it was a big turn off.

How To Use

Our Kentaro Whipped Butters are multi-purpose. They can be used to seal in moisture and add sheen to hair; hold & define curly styles like Bantu knots, twists and flexi rod sets; strengthen and protect hair from sun damage (UV-protection) and to rejuvenate the hairline.

Best Use For Me

This is a very good styling product because it does give hold to the hair, as it claims. It’s perfect for sealing in that moisture and I used it mainly as the final step when making my bantu knots or twists after a water-based cream or leave-in conditioner. But, I didn’t use it as often or as much as I would have liked and eventually passed it on to a family member that didn’t mind the smell.

Tips

Most important for me: only purchase this if you don’t mind the smell of shea butter and…maybe burnt vanilla? I don’t know if the mint chocolate whipped butter smells any better – but I didn’t want to risk it.

Use as a final step in styling to lock in moisture, and give a shine to the hair. It’ll stay a very long time and the results will be great. It’s also definitely infused with oils for use as a sealant in the LCO method.

Repurchase

No, I’d definitely not repurchase this one. But only because of the scent of it.
